Protect our oceans

Our oceans are in deep trouble. Fish are being killed faster than they can reproduce; we are dumping billions of pounds of plastic into the ocean; and oil and gas companies are looking for ways to suck the last drop of oil and gas off our coast even if it means soiling our most pristine beaches. Help us take the first step by asking Governor Schwarzenegger to support action that will reduce the amount of garbage going into the ocean. Then ask your friends and family to do the same by forwarding this e-mail to them. To take action, click here.

EPA closing libraries, destroying documents

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has begun closing its nationwide network of scientific libraries, effectively preventing EPA scientists and the public from accessing vast amounts of data and information on issues from toxicology to pollution. Several libraries have already been dismantled, with their contents either destroyed or shipped to repositories where they are uncataloged and inaccessible. The scientific information contained in the EPA libraries is essential to the agency's ability to make fully informed decisions that carry out its mission of protecting human health and the environment. Members of Congress have asked the EPA to cease and desist.

Please call EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson at (202) 564-4700 either today, December 1, or Monday, December 4, and tell him how much scientists rely on data and literature. Urge him to immediately halt the dismantling of the library system until Congress approves the EPA budget and all materials are readily available online. Click here to take action via the web.

SOS: Safeguard Organic Standards

After 35 years of hard work, the US organic community has built a multi-billion dollar alternative to industrial agriculture. Now large corporations, aided and abetted by the USDA and members of Congress, are moving to lower organic standardS and seize control. For the sake of the earth and our health we must stop them.

Support the "Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act"

Representative Dennis Kucinich (OH-10th) introduced the Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act (H.R. 5269) on May 2nd, 2006. Genetically Engineered (GE) foods and products are currently not labeled, despite the fact that roughly 70% of the foods in supermarkets have GE ingredients. Labeling GE foods is the only way to restore consumer choice and drive GE foods and crops from our food system. GE foods are labeled in dozens of countries around the world, including the European Union, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. As a result, food manufactures have removed GE ingredients from their products in these countries.

Poll after poll has demonstrated that the vast majority of Americans want GE Foods to be labeled. Now is the time to take action!
